Breakout Session: What is Emotional Intelligence? Understanding YOU to confidently step into your best self.

Emotionally Intelligent Leadership - By learning to understand myself and others, I can more effectively lead from a space of awareness and empathy.

"Emotional Intelligence is your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships." - Bradberry & Greaves

Did you know that Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the biggest predictor of performance? Using Bradberry and Greaves's model of Emotional Intelligence competencies and skills, students will begin to understand where they can learn and grow. Unlike IQ that is concrete, by actively exploring individual awareness and natural tendencies, students will courageously look inside themselves and how they show up in leadership. EQ is the intersection of what you see and what you do. We will utilize movie clips from popular movies and reflection to explore good and bad examples of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management so students can start to see how our understanding of ourselves and others impacts our leadership effectiveness. The best thing about emotional intelligence? If you feel as if your skills are lacking, we are actively seeking to improve them over time!

We will also examine how the added layer of people in leadership roles influence the concepts of both power and privilege. This session will also cover how a courageous leader reacts to and interacts with power and privilege. This breakout session will have the following components: presentation, self-reflection activities, and question & answer.

Breakout Session: Understanding Stereotypes Will Make You a Better Leader

Knowledge and understanding of the stereotypes we use help your leadership skills.

A strong link exists between leadership and diversity. Leadership is about empowering people, bringing out the best in others. Effective leaders bring out the best in people by making them feel accepted, respected, and connected. When people feel good about themselves and the organization, they perform better individually and as part of a team, resulting in an organization that performs better. These are the same objectives and desired results of diversity. Effective leadership empowers each individual regardless of race, sex, or religion and inspires the desire and the ability to work together toward a common goal. One of the important aspects of diversity leadership is the topic of stereotypes. As future leaders, it is important to be able to recognize your use of stereotypes but more importantly, to recognize the use of stereotypes by individuals and society. The need for speed in our society causes stereotypes. Stereotypes often contain a "kernel of truth": they are rooted in true differences between groups. Because stereotypes focus on differences, they cause belief distortions, particularly when groups are similar. Stereotypes are also context-dependent: beliefs about a group depend on the characteristics of the reference group. In line with our predictions, beliefs about abstract groups and political groups are context-dependent and distorted in the direction of representative types.

Breakout Session: Courageous Teamwork and Collaboration for Community Outreach

Answering the call to Live United is our purpose, driven by teamwork and anchored by the power to Give, Advocate, and Volunteer.

The United Way of Hall County family specializes in teamwork and collaboration with our community partners to help those in need and to build a stronger community. More than 50% of our neighbors are considered financially burdened, low income, or extremely poor; meaning they struggle to afford basic necessities. Now, in light of the current public health emergency, their struggle is even more difficult. The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus has not only made a severe impact on healthcare but also on the economy. United Way of Hall County recognizes that even families and individuals not directly affected by the pandemic's health issues may be struggling due to financial ramifications from the toll the coronavirus has taken on our economy and job market. We have seen this firsthand over the past few weeks since the COVID 19 public emergency began. Our Compass Center volume has more than doubled and many of these calls are first-time requests from people whose situations have dramatically changed. Through courageous teamwork and collaboration with our partners, we will continue to serve those affected by coronavirus, as well as forever continuing our work to advocate for those in need.

Keynote Speaker: Samantha Ramirez-Herrera

Living Outloud is a keynote focused on inspiring students to live boldly and unapologetically. Samantha Ramirez-Herrera will share personal experiences from growing up in a traditional immigrant Mexican home and culture where her voice as a young woman was often not heard or taken into consideration. She will also share bits and pieces of her journey as an immigrant in America and her fears of not belonging or having a right to speak up. She will share her own discovery of self and how she found the courage to speak up about being an undocumented immigrant and becoming empowered by owning her truth boldly. In this keynote, Sam will focus on inspiring students to speak up about what matters to them and to embrace their truths without apologies. This keynote will focus on inspiring students to discover their power, live boldly and loudly.
